'Twas on a lofty vase's sideA
Where China's gayest art had dyedA
The azure flowers that blowB
Demurest of the tabby kindC
The pensive Selima reclinedC
Gazed on the lake belowB
-
Her conscious tail her joy declaredD
The fair round face the snowy beardE
The velvet of her pawsF
Her coat that with the tortoise viesG
Her ears of jet and emerald eyesG
She saw and purred applauseF
-
Still had she gazed but 'midst the tideA
Two angel forms were seen to glideA
The genii of the streamH
Their scaly armour's Tyrian hueI
Through richest purple to the viewI
Betrayed a golden gleamH
-
The hapless nymph with wonder sawJ
A whisker first and then a clawJ
With many an ardent wishK
She stretched in vain to reach the prizeG
What female heart can gold despiseG
What cat's averse to fishK
-
Presumptuous maid with looks intentL
Again she stretched again she bentL
Nor knew the gulf betweenM
Malignant Fate sat by and smiledN
The slippery verge her feet beguiledN
She tumbled headlong inO
-
Eight times emerging from the floodP
She mewed to ev'ry wat'ry godQ
Some speedy aid to sendR
No dolphin came no nereid stirredS
Nor cruel Tom nor Susan heardS
A fav'rite has no friendR
-
From hence ye beauties undeceivedR
Know one false step is ne'er retrievedR
And be with caution boldR
Not all that tempts your wand'ring eyesG
And heedless hearts is lawful prizeG
Nor all that glisters goldR
