O Sue you certainly have beenA
A little raking roguish creatureB
And in that face may still be seenC
Each laughing love's bewitching featureB
-
For thou hast stolen many a heartD
And robb'd the sweetness of the roseE
Placed on that cheek it doth impartD
More lovely tints more fragrant blowsE
-
Yes thou art Nature's favourite childF
Array'd in smiles seducing killingG
Did Joseph live you'd drive him wildF
And set his very soul a thrillingG
-
A poet much too poor to liveH
Too poor in this rich world to roveI
Too poor for aught but verse to giveJ
But not thank God too poor to loveK
-
Gives thee his little doggerel lay OneL
truth I tell in sorrow tell itM
I'm forced to give my verse awayN
Because alas I cannot sell itM
-
And should you with a critic's eyeO
Proclaim me 'gainst the Muse a sinnerB
Reflect dear girl I that such as IO
Six times a week don't get a dinnerB
-
And want of comfort food and wineP
Will damp the genius curb the spiritQ
These wants I'll own are often mine ButQ
can't allow a want of meritQ
-
For every stupid dog that drinksR
At poet's pond nicknamed divineP
Say what he will I know he thinksR
That all he writes is wondrous fineP
