The Sibyl: A Sketch Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFGHHIIJJ

So stood the Sibyl stream'd her hoary hairA
Wild as the blast and with a comet's glareA
Glow'd her red eye balls 'midst the sunken gloomB
Of their wild orbs like death fires in a tombB
Slow like the rising storm in fitful moansC
Broke from her breast the deep prophetic tonesC
Anon with whirlwind rash the Spirit cameD
Then in dire splendour like imprison'd flameD
Flashing through rifted domes or towns amazedE
Her voice in thunder burst her arm she raisedE
Outstretch'd her hands as with a Fury's forceF
To grasp and launch the slow descending curseG
Still as she spoke her stature seem'd to growH
Still she denounced unmitigable woeH
Pain want and madness pestilence and deathI
Rode forth triumphant at her blasting breathI
Their march she marshall'd taught their ire to fallJ
And seem'd herself the emblem of them allJ
