The Sibyl: A Sketch Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFGHHIIJJ| So stood the Sibyl stream'd her hoary hair | A |
| Wild as the blast and with a comet's glare | A |
| Glow'd her red eye balls 'midst the sunken gloom | B |
| Of their wild orbs like death fires in a tomb | B |
| Slow like the rising storm in fitful moans | C |
| Broke from her breast the deep prophetic tones | C |
| Anon with whirlwind rash the Spirit came | D |
| Then in dire splendour like imprison'd flame | D |
| Flashing through rifted domes or towns amazed | E |
| Her voice in thunder burst her arm she raised | E |
| Outstretch'd her hands as with a Fury's force | F |
| To grasp and launch the slow descending curse | G |
| Still as she spoke her stature seem'd to grow | H |
| Still she denounced unmitigable woe | H |
| Pain want and madness pestilence and death | I |
| Rode forth triumphant at her blasting breath | I |
| Their march she marshall'd taught their ire to fall | J |
| And seem'd herself the emblem of them all | J |
