Stanzas Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GEGE HIJI KLKLSay why is the stern eye averted with scorn | A |
Of the stoic who passes along | B |
And why frowns the maid else as mild as the morn | A |
On the victim of falsehood and wrong | B |
- | |
For the wretch sunk in sorrow repentance and shame | C |
The tear of compassion is won | D |
And alone must she forfeit the wretch's sad claim | C |
Because she's deceived and undone | D |
- | |
Oh recal the stern look ere it reaches her heart | E |
To bid its wounds rankle anew | F |
Oh smile or embalm with a tear the sad smart | E |
And angels will smile upon you | F |
- | |
Time was when she knew nor opprobrium nor pain | G |
And youth could its pleasures impart | E |
Till some serpent distill'd through her bosom the stain | G |
As he wound round the strings of her heart | E |
- | |
Poor girl let thy tears through thy blandishments break | H |
Nor strive to retrace them within | I |
For mine would I mingle with those on thy cheek | J |
Nor think that such sorrow were sin | I |
- | |
When the low trampled reed and the pine in its pride | K |
Shall alike feel the hand of decay | L |
May thy God grant that mercy the world has denied | K |
And wipe all your sorrows away | L |
