Stanzas Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GEGE HIJI KLKL

Say why is the stern eye averted with scornA
Of the stoic who passes alongB
And why frowns the maid else as mild as the mornA
On the victim of falsehood and wrongB
-
For the wretch sunk in sorrow repentance and shameC
The tear of compassion is wonD
And alone must she forfeit the wretch's sad claimC
Because she's deceived and undoneD
-
Oh recal the stern look ere it reaches her heartE
To bid its wounds rankle anewF
Oh smile or embalm with a tear the sad smartE
And angels will smile upon youF
-
Time was when she knew nor opprobrium nor painG
And youth could its pleasures impartE
Till some serpent distill'd through her bosom the stainG
As he wound round the strings of her heartE
-
Poor girl let thy tears through thy blandishments breakH
Nor strive to retrace them withinI
For mine would I mingle with those on thy cheekJ
Nor think that such sorrow were sinI
-
When the low trampled reed and the pine in its prideK
Shall alike feel the hand of decayL
May thy God grant that mercy the world has deniedK
And wipe all your sorrows awayL
