What sovereign good shall satiate man's desiresA
Propell'd by Hope's unconquerable firesA
Vain each bright bauble by ambition prizedB
Unwon 'tis worshipp'd but possess'd despisedB
Yet all defect with virtue shines alliedC
His mightiest impulse genius owes to prideC
From conquer'd science graced with glorious spoilsD
He still dares on demands sublimer toilsD
And had not Nature check'd his vent'rous wingE
His eye had pierced her at her primal springE
-
Thus when enwrapt Prometheus strove to traceF
Inspired perceptions of celestial graceF
Th' ideal spirit fugitive as windG
Art's forceful spells in adamant confinedG
Curved with nice chisel floats the obsequious lineH
From stone unconscious beauty beams divineH
On magic poised th' exulting structure swimsI
And spurns attraction with elastic limbsI
While ravish'd fancy vivifies the formJ
While judgment toils to analyze its charmK
While admiration spreads her speaking handsL
The lofty artist undelighted standsL
He longs to ravish from the bless'd abodesL
The seal of heaven the attribute of godsL
To give his labour more than man can giveM
Breathe Jove's own breath and bid the marble liveN
-
Won from her woof embellishing the skiesL
Descending Pallas soothes her vot'ry's sighsL
Where 'midst the twilight of o'er arching grovesL
By waking visions led th' enthusiast rovesL
Like summer suns by showery clouds conceal'dO
With sudden blaze the goddess shines reveal'dO
Behold she cries in thy distinguished causeL
I challenge Jove's inexorable lawsL
With life stol'n essence let th' awaken'd stoneP
A super human generation ownP
Defrauded nature shall admire the deedQ
And time recoil at thy immortal meedQ
-
Impregn'd with action and convoked to breatheR
Sighs the still form his ardent hands beneathS
Electric lustres flash from either eveT
O'er its pale cheeks suffusive flushes flyU
And glossy damps its clust'ring curls adornV
Like dew drops bright'ning on the brows of mornV
Through nerves that vibrate in unfolding chainsL
Foams the warm life blood excavating veinsL
'Till all infused and organized the wholeW
The finish'd fabric hails the breathing soulW
Then waked tumultuous in th' alarmed breastQ
Contending passions claim th' etherial guestQ
And still as each alternate empire provesL
She hopes she fears she envies and she lovesL
Owns all sensations that deride the spanX
And eternize the little life of manX
