Rhyme Scheme: A BCDEFGHIDAJKL MNOPQRSTUVWR XYZA2B2 C2D2E2F2Physician and Naturalist to Lord Amherst Governor General of India who died at Cawnpoor th of November | A |
- | |
- | |
Another awful warning voice of death | B |
To human dignity and human pride | C |
'Tis sad to mark how short the longest life | D |
How brief was thine Thy day is done | E |
And all its complicated hopes and fears | F |
Lie buried ABEL in an early grave | G |
The unavailing tear for thee shall flow | H |
And love and friendship faithful record keep | I |
Of all thy varied worth thy anxious strife | D |
For fame and years now gone for ever | A |
Yet o'er thy tomb science and learning | J |
Bend in mute regret and truth proclaims | K |
Thy just inheritance an honour'd name | L |
- | |
Lamented most by those who knew thee best | M |
Accept this humble tributary lay | N |
From one who in thy boyhood and thy prime | O |
Had shared thy friendship and had fondly hoped | P |
When last we parted many years were thine | Q |
And joys in store that thy elastic mind | R |
Might long have gladden'd life's monotony | S |
Thine was a princely heart a joyous soul | T |
The charm of reason and the sprightly wit | U |
Which kept dull letter'd ignorance in awe | V |
Shook the pretender on his tinsel throne | W |
And claim'd the glorious dignity of mind | R |
- | |
Alas that in thy prime when time began | X |
To make thee nearly all the World could wish | Y |
The spoiler Death should unrelenting come | Z |
As though in envy of thy wondrous skill | A2 |
And stop the fountain of a noble heart | B2 |
- | |
Rest anxious spirit from life's feverish dream | C2 |
From all its sad realities and cares | D2 |
Be this thy Epitaph thy honour'd boast | E2 |
Thine was the fame which thine own mind achieved | F2 |
