Physician and Naturalist to Lord Amherst Governor General ofA
India who died at Cawnpoor th of NovemberB
-
-
Another awful warning voice of deathC
To human dignity and human prideD
'Tis sad to mark how short the longest lifeE
How brief was thine Thy day is doneF
And all its complicated hopes and fearsG
Lie buried ABEL in an early graveH
The unavailing tear for thee shall flowI
And love and friendship faithful record keepJ
Of all thy varied worth thy anxious strifeE
For fame and years now gone for everB
Yet o'er thy tomb science and learningK
Bend in mute regret and truth proclaimsL
Thy just inheritance an honour'd nameM
-
Lamented most by those who knew thee bestN
Accept this humble tributary layO
From one who in thy boyhood and thy primeP
Had shared thy friendship and had fondly hopedQ
When last we parted many years were thineR
And joys in store that thy elastic mindS
Might long have gladden'd life's monotonyT
Thine was a princely heart a joyous soulU
The charm of reason and the sprightly witV
Which kept dull letter'd ignorance in aweW
Shook the pretender on his tinsel throneX
And claim'd the glorious dignity of mindS
-
Alas that in thy prime when time beganY
To make thee nearly all the World could wishZ
The spoiler Death should unrelenting comeA2
As though in envy of thy wondrous skillB2
And stop the fountain of a noble heartC2
-
Rest anxious spirit from life's feverish dreamD2
From all its sad realities and caresE2
Be this thy Epitaph thy honour'd boastF2
Thine was the fame which thine own mind achievedG2
