Epitaph On Matilda Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDEFFGGHIJJ KKLLEEMMNNOOIPQQRR

Sacred to Pity is upraised this stoneA
The humble tribute of a friend unknownA
To grant the beauteous wreck its hallow'd claimB
And add to misery's scroll another nameB
Poor lost MATILDA now in silence laidC
Within the early grave thy sorrows madeC
Sleep on his heart still holds thy image dearD
Who view'd through life thy errors with a tearE
Who ne'er with stoic apathy repress'dF
The heartfelt sigh for loveliness distress'dF
That sigh for thee shall ne'er forget to heaveG
'Tis all he now can give or thou receiveG
When last I saw thee in thy envied bloomH
That promised health and joy for years to comeI
Methought the lily nature proudly gaveJ
Would never wither in th' untimely graveJ
-
Ah sad reverse too soon the fated hourK
Saw the dire tempest 'whelm th' expanding flowerK
Then from thy tongue its music ceased to flowL
Thine eye forgot to gleam with aught but woeL
Peace fled thy breast invincible despairE
Usurp'd her seat and struck his daggers thereE
Did not the unpitying world thy sorrows flyM
And ah what then was left thee but to dieM
Yet not a friend beheld thy parting breathN
Or mingled solace with the pangs of deathN
No priest proclaim'd the erring hour forgivenO
Or sooth'd thy spirit to its native heav'nO
But Heaven more bounteous bade the pilgrim comeI
And hovering angels hail'd their sister homeP
I where the marble swells not to rehearseQ
Thy hapless fate inscribe my simple verseQ
Thy tale dear shade my heart essays to tellR
Accept its offering while it heaves farewellR
