Stranger if thou e'er did'st loveA
If nature in thy bosom glowsB
A Minstrel rude may haply moveC
Thine heart to sigh for Anna's woesB
-
Lo beneath the humble tombD
Obscure the luckless maiden sleepsE
Round it pity's flowerets bloomD
O'er it memory fondly weepsE
-
And ever be the tribute paidF
The warm heart's sympathetic flowG
Richer by far ill fated maidF
Than all the shadowy pomp of woeG
-
The shadowy pomp to thee deniedH
While pity bade thy spirit restI
While superstition scowl'd besideH
And vainly bade it not be blestI
-
Ah could I with unerring truthJ
Inspir'd by memory's magic powerK
Pourtray thee grac'd in ripening youthJ
With new enchantment every hourK
-
When fortune smil'd and hope was youngL
And hail'd thee like the bounteous MayM
Renewing still thy steps amongL
The faded flowers of yesterdayM
-
All plaintive then my lute should soundN
While fancy sigh'd thy form to seeO
The list'ning maids should weep aroundN
And swains lament thy fate with meO
-
And Stranger thou who hear'st the taleP
By soft infection taught to mournQ
Would'st wet with tears the primrose paleP
That blooms beside her sylvan urnR
-
For she was fair as forms of loveA
Oft by the 'rapt enthusiast seenS
Who slumbers midst the myrtle groveT
With spring's unfolding blossoms greenS
-
All eloquent her eyes express'dI
Her heart to each fine feeling trueU
For in their orbs did pity restI
Suffusing soft their beamy blueU
-
And silence pleas'd his reign resign'dV
Whene'er he heard her vocal tongueL
And grief in slumbers sweet reclin'dV
As on his ear its accents hungL
-
But vain the charms that grac'd the maidF
The eye where pity lov'd to reignW
The form where fascination play'dF
The voice that breath'd enchantment vainW
-
Unequal all their syren powerK
To win from fate it's frown awayM
When Bertram came in luckless hourK
To sigh to flatter to betrayM
-
He came inform'd in every artX
That makes th'incautious virgin weepY
Beguiles the unsuspecting heartX
And lulls mistrust to silken sleepY
-
His tale she heard nor thought the whileZ
That falshood such a tale could tellA2
That dark deceit could e'er defileA2
The tongue that talk'd of truth so wellA2
-
He woo'd he wept 'till all was wonB2
Then as the spring born zephyrs flyA2
He fled he left her lost undoneB2
In penitential tears to dieA2
-
Oh could she live condemn'd to feelA2
The insults of exulting scornQ
Relentless as the three edg'd steelA2
Illicit pleasure's eldest bornQ
-
Who 'mid despair's impervious gloomD
Should bid her soul's sad wand'rings ceaseC2
Th'extinguish'd spark of hope relumeD
And sooth the penitent to peaceC2
-
She saw her aged mother bowD2
Subdued by exquisite distressE2
For every hope was faded nowD2
And life a weary wildernessF2
-
She saw her in the cold earth laidF
And not a tear was seen to startX
And not a sigh the pangs allay'dF
That agoniz'd her bursting heartX
-
And when the mournful rite was doneB2
A sculptur'd woe she seem'd to moveC
As close she clasp'd her infant sonB2
The pledge of faithless Bertram's loveA
-
While slow she pac'd the lone church yardG2
With pity's accents soft and sadH2
We strove to win her fix'd regardG2
But vainly strove for Ann was madH2
-
'Lorn listless like a wither'd flowerK
Blown o'er the plain by every blastI2
Impell'd by fancy's fitful powerK
The lovely luckless victim pastI2
-
'Till left alone the wood she soughtJ2
Where first her Bertram's vows she heardK2
And first with soft affection fraughtJ2
His vows return'd to Heaven prefer'dK2
-
Each scene she trac'd to memory dearL2
Tho' memory lent a feeble rayM
Reason's benighted bark to steerL2
Thro' dark distraction's stormy wayM
-
At length where yon translucent tideH
Meanders slow the meads amongL
Reclining on its sedgy sideH
Thus to her sleeping babe she sungL
-
Sweet cherub on the green bank restI
And balmy may thy slumbers beO
For tempests tear thy mother's breastI
Alas it cannot pillow theeO
-
I'll wander 'till thy sire I've foundN
I'll lure his footsteps where you lieA2
While mantling waters murmur roundN
And wild winds sing your lullabyA2
-
Haply shalt thou his scorn subdueU
Thy helpless innocence to saveM2
But if unmov'd he turns from youU
I'll lead him to my mother's graveM2
-
Sure waken'd there remorse shall riseN2
And bid his perjur'd bosom shedO2
That tender tear my heart deniesN2
Cold icy cold congeal'd and deadO2
-
Then wildly through each well known wayM
Again she fled the youth to seekP2
Nor paus'd 'till Cynthia's mournful rayM
Play'd paly on her paler cheekP2
-
Once more she sought the river's sideH
The goal of her accomplish'd wayM
Where 'whelm'd beneath the rising tideH
Her heart's dissever'd treasure layM
-
Amaz'd convuls'd she shriek'd she sprungL
She clasp'd it in its wat'ry bedO2
The dirge of death the night blasts sungL
The morn in tears beheld them deadO2
-
Their pale remains with pious careQ2
Beneath the vernal turf we laidF
Remembrance loves to linger thereQ2
And weep beneath the willow shadeF
-
And oft the fairest flowers of springR2
What time the hours of toil are spentS2
The village youths and virgins bringR2
To grace her moss clad monumentT2
