The Resignation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGH IJIJ KLKL CFCF MNMN DODO

O God whose thunder shakes the skyA
Whose eye this atom globe surveysB
To thee my only rock I flyA
Thy mercy in thy justice praiseB
-
The mystic mazes of thy willC
The shadows of celestial lightD
Are past the pow'r of human skillC
But what th' Eternal acts is rightD
-
O teach me in the trying hourE
When anguish swells the dewy tearF
To still my sorrows own thy pow'rG
Thy goodness love thy justice fearH
-
If in this bosom aught but TheeI
Encroaching sought a boundless swayJ
Omniscience could the danger seeI
And Mercy look the cause awayJ
-
Then why my soul dost thou complainK
Why drooping seek the dark recessL
Shake off the melancholy chainK
For God created all to blessL
-
But ah my breast is human stillC
The rising sigh the falling tearF
My languid vitals' feeble rillC
The sickness of my soul declareF
-
But yet with fortitude resignedM
I'll thank th' inflicter of the blowN
Forbid the sigh compose my mindM
Nor let the gush of mis'ry flowN
-
The gloomy mantle of the nightD
Which on my sinking spirit stealsO
Will vanish at the morning lightD
Which God my East my sun revealsO
