On Tiber's banks Tiber whose waters glideA
In slow meanders down to Gaigra's sideA
And circling all the horrid mountain roundB
Rushes impetuous to the deep profoundB
Rolls o'er the ragged rocks with hideous yellC
Collects its waves beneath the earth's vast shellC
There for a while in loud confusion hurl'dD
It crumbles mountains down and shakes the worldD
Till borne upon the pinions of the airE
Through the rent earth the bursting waves appearF
Fiercely propell'd the whiten'd billows riseG
Break from the cavern and ascend the skiesG
Then lost and conquered by superior forceH
Through hot Arabia holds its rapid courselC
On Tiber's banks where scarlet jas'mines bloomI
And purple aloes shed a rich perfumeI
Where when the sun is melting in his heatJ
The reeking tygers find a cool retreatJ
Bask in the sedges lose the sultry beamK
And wanton with their shadows in the streamK
On Tiber's banks by sacred priests rever'dL
Where in the days of old a god appear'dL
'Twas in the dead of night at Chalma's feastM
The tribe of Alra slept around the priestM
He spoke as evening thunders bursting nearF
His horrid accents broke upon the earN
Attend Alraddas with your sacred priestM
This day the sun is rising in the eastM
The sun which shall illumine all the earthO
Now now is rising in a mortal birthO
He vanish'd like a vapour of the nightP
And sunk away in a faint blaze of lightP
Swift from the branches of the holy oakQ
Horror confusion fear and torment brakeR
And still when midnight trims her mazy lampS
They take their way through Tiber's wat'ry swampT
On Tiber's banks close ranked a warring trainU
Stretch'd to the distant edge of Galca's plainU
So when arrived at Gaigra's highest steepV
We view the wide expansion of the deepV
See in the gilding of her wat'ry robeW
The quick declension of the circling globeW
From the blue sea a chain of mountains riseG
Blended at once with water and with skiesG
Beyond our sight in vast extension curl'dD
The check of waves the guardians of the worldD
Strong were the warriors as the ghost of CawnU
Who threw the Hill of archers to the lawnU
When the soft earth at his appearance fledX
And rising billows play'd around his headX
When a strong tempest rising from the mainU
Dashed the full clouds unbroken on the plainU
Nicou immortal in the sacred songY
Held the red sword of war and led the strongY
From his own tribe the sable warriors cameZ
Well try'd in battle and well known in fameZ
Nicou descended from the god of warA2
Who lived coeval with the morning starB2
Narada was his name who cannot tellC
How all the world through great Narada fellC
Vichon the god who ruled above the skiesG
Look'd on Narada but with envious eyesG
The warrior dared him ridiculed his mightP
Bent his white bow and summon'd him to fightP
Vichon disdainful bade his lightnings flyC
And scatter'd burning arrows in the skyC
Threw down a star the armour of his feetJ
To burn the air with supernat'ral heatJ
Bid a loud tempes roar beneath the groundB
Lifted him up and bore him thro' the seaC2
The waters still ascending fierce and highC
He tower'd into the chambers of the skyC
There Vichon sat his armour on his bedX
He thought Narada with the mighty deadX
Before his seat the heavenly warrior standsD2
The lightning quiv'ring in his yellow handsD2
The god astonish'd dropt hurl'd from the shoreA2
He dropt to torments and to rise no moreA2
-
Head long he falls 'tis his own arms compelC
Condemn'd in ever burning fires to dwellC
From this Narada mighty Nicou sprungE2
The mighty Nicou furious wild and youngE2
Who led th'embattled archers to the fieldF2
And more a thunderbolt upon his shieldF2
That shield his glorious father died to gainU
When the white warriors fled along the plainU
When the full sails could not provoke the floodG2
Till Nicou came and swell'd the seas with bloodG2
Slow at the end of his robust arrayH2
The mighty warrior pensive took his wayH2
Against the son of Nair the young RorestG2
Once the companion of his youthful breastG2
Strong were the passions of the son of NairE
Strong as the tempest of the evening airE
Insatiate in desire fierce as the boarA2
Firm in resolve as Cannie's rocky shoreA2
Long had the gods endeavour'd to destroyI2
All Nicou's friendship happiness and joyI2
They sought in vain 'till Vicat Vichon's sonU
Never in feats of wickedness outdoneU
Saw Nica sister to the Mountain kingJ2
Drest beautiful with all the flow'rs of springJ2
He saw and scatter'd poison in her eyesG
From limb to limb in varied forms he fliesG
Dwelt on her crimson lip and added graceK2
To every glossy feature of her faceK2
Rorest was fir'd with passion at the sightG2
Friendship and honor sunk to Vicat's rightG2
He saw he lov'd and burning with desireL2
Bore the soft maid from brother sister sireL2
Pining with sorrow Nica faded diedG2
Like a fair alow in its morning prideG2
This brought the warrior to the bloody meadG2
And sent to young Rorest the threat'ning reedG2
He drew his army forth Oh need I tellC
That Nicou conquer'd and the lover fellC
His breathless army mantled all the plainU
And Death sat smiling on the heaps of slainU
The battle ended with his reeking dartG2
The pensive Nicou pierc'd his beating heartG2
And to his mourning valiant warriors cry'dG2
I and my sister's ghost are satisfy'dG2
