The Churchwarden And The Apparition: A Fable Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHIJKFF LLMMNNOOPP

The night was cold the wind was highA
And stars bespangled all the skyA
Churchwarden Joe had laid him downB
And slept secure on bed of downB
But still the pleasing hope of gainC
That never left his active brainC
Exposed the churchyard to his viewD
That seat of treasure wholly newD
Pull down that cross he quickly criedE
The mason instantly compliedE
When lo behold the golden prizeF
Appears joy sparkles in his eyesF
The door now creaks the window shakesG
With sudden fear he starts and wakesG
Quaking and pale in eager hasteH
His haggard eyes around he castI
A ghastly phantom lean and wanJ
That instant rose and thus beganK
Weak wretch to think to blind my eyesF
Hypocrisy's a thin disguiseF
Your humble mien and fawning tongueL
Have oft deceived the old and youngL
On this side now and now on thatM
The very emblem of the batM
Whatever part you take we knowN
'Tis only interest makes it soN
And though with sacred zeal you burnO
Religion's only for your turnO
I'm Conscience called Joe greatly fearedP
The lightning flashed it disappearedP
