Where the rough Caigra rolls the surgy waveA
Urging his thunders thro' the echoing caveA
Where the sharp rocks in distant horror seenB
Drive the white currents thro' the spreading greenB
Where the loud tiger pawing in his rageC
Bids the black archers of the wilds engageC
Stretch'd on the sand two panting warriors layD
In all the burning torments of the dayD
Their bloody jav'lins reeked one living steamE
Their bows were broken at the roaring streamE
Heccar the Chief of Jarra's fruitful hillF
Where the dark vapours nightly dews distilF
Saw Gaira the companion of his soulG
Extended where loud Caigra's billows rollG
Gaira the king of warring archers foundH
Where daily lightnings plough the sandy groundH
Where brooding tempests bowl along the skyI
Where rising deserts whirl'd in circles flyI
-
HeccarJ
Gaira 'tis useless to attempt the chaceK
Swifter than hunted wolves they urge the raceK
Their lessening forms elude the straining eyeI
Upon the plumage of macaws they flyI
Let us return and strip the reeking slainL
Leaving the bodies on the burning plainL
-
GairaJ
Heccar my vengeance still exclaims for bloodM
'Twould drink a wider stream than Caigra's floodM
This jav'lin oft in nobler quarrels try'dM
Put the loud thunder of their arms asideM
Fast as the streaming rain I pour'd the dartM
Hurling a whirlwind thro' the trembling heartM
But now my ling'ring feet revenge deniesN
O could I throw my jav'lin from my eyesN
-
HeccarJ
When Gaira the united armies brokeO
Death wing'd the arrow death impell'd the strokeO
See pil'd in mountains on the sanguine sandM
The blasted of the lightnings of thy handM
Search the brown desert and the glossy greenB
There are the trophies of thy valour seenB
The scatter'd bones mantled in silver whiteM
Once animated dared the force in fightM
The children of the wave whose pallid faceK
Views the faint sun display a languid faceK
From the red fury of thy justice fledM
Swifter than torrents from their rocky bedM
Fear with a sickened silver ting'd their hueP
The guilty fear when vengeance is their dueP
-
GairaJ
Rouse not Remembrance from her shadowy cellQ
Nor of those bloody sons of mischief tellQ
Cawna O Cawna deck'd in sable charmsR
What distant region holds thee from my armsR
Cawna the pride of Afric's sultry valesS
Soft as the cooling murmur of the galesS
Majestic as the many colour'd snakeT
Trailing his glories thro' the blossom'd brakeT
Black as the glossy rocks where Eascal roarsU
Foaming thro' sandy wastes to Jaghir's shoresU
Swift as the arrow hasting to the breastM
Was Cawna the companion of my restM
-
The sun sat low'ring in the western skyI
The swelling tempest spread around the eyeI
Upon my Cawna's bosom I reclin'dM
Catching the breathing whispers of the windM
Swift from the wood a prowling tiger cameV
Dreadful his voice his eyes a glowing flameV
I bent the bow the never erring dartM
Pierced his rough armour but escaped his heartM
He fled tho' wounded to a distant wasteM
I urg'd the furious flight with fatal hasteM
He fell he died spent in the fiery toilW
I strip'd his carcase of the furry spoilW
And as the varied spangles met my eyeI
On this I cried shall my loved Cawna lieI
The dusky midnight hung the skies in greyJ
Impell'd by love I wing'd the airy wayJ
In the deep valley and mossy plainL
I sought my Cawna but I sought in vainL
The pallid shadows of the azure wavesX
Had made my Cawna and my children slavesX
Reflection maddens to recall the hourJ
The gods had given me to the demon's powerJ
The dusk slow vanished from the hated lawnY
I gain'd a mountain glaring with the dawnY
There the full sails expanded to the windM
Struck horror and distraction in my mindM
There Cawna mingled with a worthless trainL
In common slavery drags the hated chainL
Now judge my Heccar have I cause for rageC
Should aught the thunder of my arm assuageC
In ever reeking blood this jav'lin dyedM
With vengeance shall be never satisfiedM
I'll strew the beaches with the mighty deadM
And tinge the lily of their features redM
-
HeccarJ
When the loud shriekings of the hostile cryJ
Roughly salute my ear enraged I'll flyJ
Send the sharp arrow quivering thro' the heartM
Chill the hot vitals with the venom'd dartM
Nor heed the shining steel or noisy smokeO
Gaira and Vengeance shall inspire the strokeO
