Urging his thunders thro' the echoing cave | A |
Where the sharp rocks in distant horror seen | B |
Drive the white currents thro' the spreading green | B |
Where the loud tiger pawing in his rage | C |
Bids the black archers of the wilds engage | C |
Stretch'd on the sand two panting warriors lay | D |
In all the burning torments of the day | D |
Their bloody jav'lins reeked one living steam | E |
Their bows were broken at the roaring stream | E |
Heccar the Chief of Jarra's fruitful hill | F |
Where the dark vapours nightly dews distil | F |
Saw Gaira the companion of his soul | G |
Extended where loud Caigra's billows roll | G |
Gaira the king of warring archers found | H |
Where daily lightnings plough the sandy ground | H |
Where brooding tempests bowl along the sky | I |
Where rising deserts whirl'd in circles fly | I |
- | |
Heccar | J |
Gaira 'tis useless to attempt the chace | K |
Swifter than hunted wolves they urge the race | K |
Their lessening forms elude the straining eye | I |
Upon the plumage of macaws they fly | I |
Let us return and strip the reeking slain | L |
Leaving the bodies on the burning plain | L |
- | |
Gaira | J |
Heccar my vengeance still exclaims for blood | M |
'Twould drink a wider stream than Caigra's flood | M |
This jav'lin oft in nobler quarrels try'd | M |
Put the loud thunder of their arms aside | M |
Fast as the streaming rain I pour'd the dart | M |
Hurling a whirlwind thro' the trembling heart | M |
But now my ling'ring feet revenge denies | N |
O could I throw my jav'lin from my eyes | N |
- | |
Heccar | J |
When Gaira the united armies broke | O |
Death wing'd the arrow death impell'd the stroke | O |
See pil'd in mountains on the sanguine sand | M |
The blasted of the lightnings of thy hand | M |
Search the brown desert and the glossy green | B |
There are the trophies of thy valour seen | B |
The scatter'd bones mantled in silver white | M |
Once animated dared the force in fight | M |
The children of the wave whose pallid face | K |
Views the faint sun display a languid face | K |
From the red fury of thy justice fled | M |
Swifter than torrents from their rocky bed | M |
Fear with a sickened silver ting'd their hue | P |
The guilty fear when vengeance is their due | P |
- | |
Gaira | J |
Rouse not Remembrance from her shadowy cell | Q |
Nor of those bloody sons of mischief tell | Q |
Cawna O Cawna deck'd in sable charms | R |
What distant region holds thee from my arms | R |
Cawna the pride of Afric's sultry vales | S |
Soft as the cooling murmur of the gales | S |
Majestic as the many colour'd snake | T |
Trailing his glories thro' the blossom'd brake | T |
Black as the glossy rocks where Eascal roars | U |
Foaming thro' sandy wastes to Jaghir's shores | U |
Swift as the arrow hasting to the breast | M |
Was Cawna the companion of my rest | M |
- | |
The sun sat low'ring in the western sky | I |
The swelling tempest spread around the eye | I |
Upon my Cawna's bosom I reclin'd | M |
Catching the breathing whispers of the wind | M |
Swift from the wood a prowling tiger came | V |
Dreadful his voice his eyes a glowing flame | V |
I bent the bow the never erring dart | M |
Pierced his rough armour but escaped his heart | M |
He fled tho' wounded to a distant waste | M |
I urg'd the furious flight with fatal haste | M |
He fell he died spent in the fiery toil | W |
I strip'd his carcase of the furry spoil | W |
And as the varied spangles met my eye | I |
On this I cried shall my loved Cawna lie | I |
The dusky midnight hung the skies in grey | J |
Impell'd by love I wing'd the airy way | J |
In the deep valley and mossy plain | L |
I sought my Cawna but I sought in vain | L |
The pallid shadows of the azure waves | X |
Had made my Cawna and my children slaves | X |
Reflection maddens to recall the hour | J |
The gods had given me to the demon's power | J |
The dusk slow vanished from the hated lawn | Y |
I gain'd a mountain glaring with the dawn | Y |
There the full sails expanded to the wind | M |
Struck horror and distraction in my mind | M |
There Cawna mingled with a worthless train | L |
In common slavery drags the hated chain | L |
Now judge my Heccar have I cause for rage | C |
Should aught the thunder of my arm assuage | C |
In ever reeking blood this jav'lin dyed | M |
With vengeance shall be never satisfied | M |
I'll strew the beaches with the mighty dead | M |
And tinge the lily of their features red | M |
- | |
Heccar | J |
When the loud shriekings of the hostile cry | J |
Roughly salute my ear enraged I'll fly | J |
Send the sharp arrow quivering thro' the heart | M |
Chill the hot vitals with the venom'd dart | M |
Nor heed the shining steel or noisy smoke | O |
Gaira and Vengeance shall inspire the stroke | O |
