To My Worthy Friend Mr. George Sandys Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDECCBBFFBBGGHH EEEEEEIIGGEEJKBBI presse not to the Quire nor dare I greet | A |
The holy Place with my unhallow'd feet | A |
My unwasht Muse pollutes not things Divine | B |
Nor mingles her prophaner notes with thine | B |
Here humbly at the Porch she listning stayes | C |
And with glad eares sucks in thy Sacred Layes | C |
So devout Penitents of old were wont | D |
Some without doore and some beneath the Font | E |
To stand and heare the Churches Liturgies | C |
Yet not assist the solemne Exercise | C |
Sufficeth her that she a Lay place gaine | B |
To trim thy Vestments or but beare thy traine | B |
Though nor in Tune nor Wing She reach thy Larke | F |
Her Lyricke feet may dance before the Arke | F |
Who knowes but that Her wandring eyes that run | B |
Now hunting Glow wormes may adore the Sun | B |
A pure Flame may shot by Almighty Power | G |
Into my brest the earthy flame devoure | G |
My Eyes in Penitentiall dew may steepe | H |
That bryne which they for sensuall love did weepe | H |
So though 'gainst Natures course fire may be quencht | E |
With fire and water be with water drencht | E |
Perhaps my restlesse Soule tyr'd with pursuit | E |
Of mortall beautie seeking without fruit | E |
Contentment there which hath not when enjoy'd | E |
Quencht all her thirst nor satisfi'd though cloy'd | E |
Weary of her vaine search below above | I |
In the first Faire may find th' immortall Love | I |
Prompted by thy Example then no more | G |
In moulds of Clay will I my God adore | G |
But teare those Idols from my Heart and Write | E |
What his blest Sp'rit not fond Love shall endite | E |
Then I no more shall court the Verdant Bay | J |
But the dry leavelesse Trunk on Golgotha | K |
And rather strive to gaine from thence one Thorne | B |
Then all the flourishing Wreathes by Laureats worne | B |
