Epitaph For Maria Wentworth Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAA BBB CDC EEE FFF GGG HHH

And here the precious dust is laidA
Whose purely temper'd clay was madeA
So fine that it the guest betray'dA
-
Else the soul grew so fast withinB
It broke the outward shell of sinB
And so was hatch'd a cherubinB
-
In height it soar'd to God aboveC
In depth it did to knowledge moveD
And spread in breadth to general loveC
-
Before a pious duty shin'dE
To parents courtesy behindE
On either side an equal mindE
-
Good to the poor to kindred dearF
To servants kind to friendship clearF
To nothing but herself severeF
-
So though a virgin yet a brideG
To ev'ry grace she justifiedG
A chaste polygamy and diedG
-
Learn from hence reader what small trustH
We owe this world where virtue mustH
Frail as our flesh crumble to dustH
