Triumphal arch that fill'st the skyA
When storms prepare to partB
I ask not proud PhilosophyC
To teach me what thou artB
-
Still seem as to my childhood's sightD
A midway station givenE
For happy spirits to alightD
Betwixt the earth and heavenE
-
Can all that Optics teach unfoldF
Thy form to please me soG
As when I dreamt of gems and goldF
Hid in thy radiant bowH
-
When Science from Creation's faceI
Enchantment's veil withdrawsJ
What lovely visions yield their placeI
To cold material lawsJ
-
And yet fair bow no fabling dreamsK
But words of the Most HighA
Have told why first thy robe of beamsK
Was woven in the skyA
-
When o'er the green undeluged earthL
Heaven's covenant thou didst shineM
How came the world's gray fathers forthN
To watch thy sacred signM
-
And when its yellow luster smiledO
O'er mountains yet untrodO
Each mother held aloft her childO
To bless the bow of GodO
-
Methinks thy jubilee to keepP
The first made anthem rangQ
On earth delivered from the deepP
And the first poet sangQ
-
Nor ever shall the Muse's eyeA
Unraptured greet thy beamR
Theme of primeval prophecyC
Be still the prophet's themeR
-
The earth to thee her incense yieldsS
The lark thy welcome singsT
When glittering in the freshened fieldsS
The snowy mushroom springsT
-
How glorious is thy girdle castO
O'er mountain tower and townU
Or mirrored in the ocean vastO
A thousand fathoms downU
-
As fresh in yon horizon darkV
As young thy beauties seemR
As when the eagle from the arkV
First sported in thy beamR
-
For faithful to its sacred pageW
Heaven still rebuilds thy spanX
Nor lets the type grow pale with ageW
That first spoke peace to manX
