The Exile Of Erin Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDDDE EFEFGGGE DEDEFFFE HIHIEEEI CECEDDDThere came to the beach a poor Exile of Erin | A |
The dew on his thin robe was heavy and chill | B |
For his country he sign'd when at twilight repairing | C |
To wander alone by the wind beaten hill | B |
But the day star attracted his eye's sad devotion | D |
For it rose o'er his own native isle fo the ocean | D |
Where once in the fire of his youthful emotion | D |
He sang the bold anthem of Erin Go Bragh | E |
- | |
'Sad is my fate ' said the heart broken stranger | E |
'The wild deer and wolf to the covert can flee | F |
But I have no refuge from famine and danger | E |
A home and a country remain not to me | F |
Never again in my green sunny bowers | G |
Where my forefathers lived shall I spend the sweet hours | G |
Or cover my harp with the wild woven flowers | G |
And strike to the numbers of Erin Go Bragh | E |
- | |
'Erin my country though sad and forsaken | D |
In dreams I revisit thy sea beaten shore | E |
But alas in a far foreign land I awaken | D |
And sigh for the friends who can meet me no more | E |
Oh cruel fate wilt thou never replace me | F |
In a mansion of peace where no perils can chase me | F |
Never again shall my brothers embrace me | F |
They died to defend me or live to deplore | E |
- | |
'Where is my cabin door fast by the wild wood | H |
Sisters and sire did ye weep for its fall | I |
Where is the mother that looked on my childhood | H |
And where is the bosom friend dearer than all | I |
Ah my sad soul long abandoned by pleasure | E |
Why did it dote on a fast fading treasure | E |
Tears like the rain drops may fall without measure | E |
But rapture and beauty they cannot recall | I |
- | |
'Yet all its fond recollections suppressing | C |
One dying wish my lone bosom shall draw | E |
Erin an exile bequeaths thee his blessing | C |
Land of my forefathers Erin go bragh | E |
Buried and cold when my heart stills her motion | D |
Green be thy fields sweetest isle of the ocean | D |
And thy harp striking bards sind aloud with devotion | D |
ERIN MAVOURNEEN ERIN GO BRAGH ' | - |
