The brave Roland the brave RolandA
False tidings reached the Rhenish strandB
That he had fallen in fightC
And thy faithful bosom swooned with painD
O loveliest maiden of All mayneD
For the loss of thine own true knightC
-
But why so rash has she ta'en the veilE
In yon Nonnenwerder's choisters paleE
For her vow had scarce been swornF
And the fatal mantle o'er her flungG
When the Drachenfels to a trumpet rungG
'Twas her own dear warrior 's hornF
-
Woe woe each heart shall bleed shall breakH
She would have hung upon his neckI
Had he come but yester evenJ
And he had clasped those peerless charmsK
That shall never never fill his armsK
Or meet him but in heavenL
-
Yet Roland the brave Roland the trueM
He could not bid that spot adieuM
It was dear still 'midst his woesN
For he loved to breathe the neighbouring airO
And to think she blessed him in her prayerO
When the Halleluiah roseN
-
There 's yet one window of that pileP
Which he built above the Nun's green isleP
Thence sad and oft looked heQ
When the chant and organ sounded slowR
On the mansion of his love belowR
For herself he might not seeQ
-
She died He sought the battle plainD
Her image filled his dying brainD
When he fell and wished to fallS
And her name was in his latest sighT
When Roland the flower of chivalryQ
Exired at RoncevallS
