Hohenlinden Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAAB CCCB DDDB EEEB AAAB EEEB FFFB DDDB

On Linden when the sun was lowA
All bloodless lay the untrodden snowA
And dark as winter was the flowA
Of Iser rolling rapidlyB
-
But Linden saw another sightC
When the drum beat at dead of nightC
Commanding fires of death to lightC
The darkness of her sceneryB
-
By torch and trumpet fast arrayedD
Each horseman drew his battle bladeD
And furious every charger neighedD
To join the dreadful revelryB
-
Then shook the hills with thunder rivenE
Then rushed the steed to battle drivenE
And louder than the bolts of heavenE
Far flashed the red artilleryB
-
But redder yet that light shall glowA
On Linden's hills of stain d snowA
And bloodier yet the torrent flowA
Of Iser rolling rapidlyB
-
'Tis morn but scarce yon level sunE
Can pierce the war clouds rolling dunE
Where furious Frank and fiery HunE
Shout in their sulphurous canopyB
-
The combat deepens On ye braveF
Who rush to glory or the graveF
Wave Munich all thy banners waveF
And charge with all thy chivalryB
-
Few few shall part where many meetD
The snow shall be their winding sheetD
And every turf beneath their feetD
Shall be a soldier's sepulchreB
