Exile Of Erin Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DDDE EFEF GGGE DEDE FFFE HIHI EEEI CECE DDDE

There came to the beach a poor Exile of ErinA
The dew on his thin robe was heavy and chillB
For his country he sign'd when at twilight repairingC
To wander alone by the wind beaten hillB
-
But the day star attracted his eye's sad devotionD
For it rose o'er his own native isle fo the oceanD
Where once in the fire of his youthful emotionD
He sang the bold anthem of Erin go braghE
-
Sad is my fate said the heart broken strangerE
The wild deer and wolf to a covert can fleeF
But I have no refuge from famine and dangerE
A home and a country remain not to meF
-
Never again in my green sunny bowersG
Where my forefathers lived shall I spend the sweet hoursG
Or cover my harp with the wild woven flowersG
And strike to the numbers of Erin go braghE
-
Erin my country though sad and forsakenD
In dreams I revisit thy sea beaten shoreE
But alas in a far foreign land I awakenD
And sigh for the friends who can meet me no moreE
-
Oh curel fate wilt thou never replace meF
In a mansion of peace where no perils can chase meF
Never again shall my brothers embrace meF
They died to defend me or live to deploreE
-
Where is my cabin door fast by the wild woodH
Sisters and sire did ye weep for its fallI
Where is the mother that look'd on my childhoodH
And where ist the bosom friend dearer than allI
-
Oh my sad heart long abandon'd by pleasureE
Why did it dote on a fast fading treasureE
Tears like the rain drop may fall without measureE
But rapture and beauty they cannot recalI
-
Yet all its sad recollections suppressingC
One dying wish my lone bosom can drawE
Erin an exile bequeaths thee his blessingC
Land of my forefathers Erin go braghE
-
Buried and cold when my heart stills her motionD
Green by the fields sweetest isle of the oceanD
And thy harp striking bards sind aloud with devotionD
Erin mavournin Erin go braghE
