Of Nelson and the NorthA
Sing the glorious day's renownB
When to battle fierce came forthA
All the might of Denmark's crownB
And her arms along the deep proudly shoneC
By each gun the lighted brandD
In a bold determined handD
And the Prince of all the landD
Led them onE
-
Like leviathans afloatF
Lay their bulwarks on the brineG
While the sign of battle flewH
On the lofty British lineG
It was ten of April morn by the chimeI
As they drifted on their pathJ
There was silence deep as deathK
And the boldest held his breathK
For a timeI
-
But the might of England flush'dL
To anticipate the sceneM
And her van the fleeter rush'dL
O'er the deadly space betweenM
'Hearts of oak ' our captains cried when each gunN
From its adamantine lipsO
Spread a death shade round the shipsO
Like the hurricane eclipseO
Of the sunN
-
Again again againP
And the havoc did not slackQ
Till a feeble cheer the DaneR
To our cheering sent us backQ
Their shots along the deep slowly boomS
Then ceased and all is wailT
As they strike the shatter'd sailT
Or in conflagration paleT
Light the gloomS
-
Out spoke the victor thenP
As he hail'd them o'er the waveU
'Ye are brothers ye are menP
And we conquer but to saveU
So peace instead of death let us bringV
But yield proud foe thy fleetW
With the crews at England's feetW
And make submission meetW
To our King '-
-
Now joy old England raiseX
For the tidings of thy mightY
By the festal cities' blazeX
Whilst the wine cup shines in lightY
And yet amidst that joy and uproarZ
Let us think of them that sleepA2
Full many a fathom deepA2
By thy wild and stormy steepA2
ElsinoreZ
