A MIDDLE AGED LYRICAL POET IS SUPPOSED TO BE TAKING FINAL LEAVE OF THE MUSE OF COMEDY SHE HAS BROUGHT HIM HIS HAT AND GLOVES AND IS ABSTRACTEDLY PICKING A THREAD OF GOLD HAIR FROM HIS COAT SLEEVE AS HE BEGINS TO SPEAKA
-
I say it under the roseB
oh thanks yes under the laurelC
We part lovers not foesB
we are not going to quarrelC
-
We have too long been friendsD
on foot and in guilded coachesE
Now that the whole thing endsD
to spoil our kiss with reproachesD
-
I leave you my soul is wrungF
I pause look back from the portalC
Ah I no more am youngF
and you child are immortalC
-
Mine is the glacier's wayG
yours is the blossom's weatherH
When were December and MayG
known to be happy togetherH
-
Before my kisses grow tameI
before my moodiness grieve youJ
While yet my heart is flameI
and I all lover I leave youJ
-
So in the coming timeK
when you count the rich years overH
Think of me in my primeK
and not as a white haired loverH
-
Fretful pierced with regretL
the wraith of dead DesireH
Thrumming a cracked spinnetL
by a slowly dying fireH
-
When at last I am coldL
years hence if the gods so will itL
Say He was true as goldL
and wear a rose in your filletL
-
Others tender as IM
will come and sue for carressesD
Woo you win you and dieM
mind you a rose in your tressesD
-
Some Melpomene wooJ
some hold Clio nearestL
You sweet Comedy youJ
were ever sweetest and dearestL
-
Nay it is time to goN
when writing your tragic sisterH
Say to that child of woeN
how sorry I was I missed herH
-
Really I cannot stayL
though parting is such sweet sorrowN
Perhaps I will on my wayL
down town look in to morrowN
