Henry Howard Brownell Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBACDECDE

They never crowned him never dreamed his worthA
And let him go unlaurelled to the graveB
Hereafter there are guerdons for the braveB
Roses for martyrs who wear thorns on earthA
Balms for bruised hearts that languish in the dearthA
Of human love So let the grasses waveB
Above him nameless Little did he craveB
Men's praises modestly with kindly mirthA
Not sad nor bitter he accepted fateC
Drank deep of life knew books and hearts of menD
Cities and camps and war's immortal woeE
Yet bore through all such virtue in him sateC
His spirit is not whiter now than thenD
A simple loyal nature pure as snowE
