GLOUCESTER AUGUSTA
-
The wind it wailed the wind it moanedB
And the white caps flecked the seaC
An' I would to God the skipper groanedB
I had not my boy with meC
-
Snug in the stern sheets little JohnD
Laughed as the scud swept byE
But the skipper's sunburnt cheeks grew wanD
As he watched the wicked skyE
-
Would he were at his mother's sideF
And the skipper's eyes were dimG
Good Lord in heaven if ill betideF
What would become of himG
-
For me my muscles are as steelH
For me let hap what mayI
I might make shift upon the keelH
Until the break o' dayI
-
But he he is so weak and smallJ
So young scarce learned to standK
O pitying Father of us allJ
I trust him in Thy handK
-
For Thou who makest from on highE
A sparrow's fall each oneL
Surely O Lord thou'lt have an eyeE
On Alec Yeaton's sonL
-
Then helm hard port right straight he sailedM
Towards the headland lightN
The wind it moaned the wind it wailedM
And black black fell the nightN
-
Then burst a storm to make one quailO
Though housed from winds and wavesP
They who could tell about that galeO
Must rise from watery gravesP
-
Sudden it came as sudden wentQ
Ere half the night was spedR
The winds were hushed the waves were spentQ
And the stars shone overheadR
-
Now as the morning mist grew thinS
The folk on Gloucester shoreT
Saw a little figure floating inS
Secure on a broken oarT
-
Up rose the cry A wreck a wreckU
Pull mates and waste no breathV
They knew it though 't was but a speckU
Upon the edge of deathV
-
Long did they marvel in the townW
At God his strange decreeC
That let the stalwart skipper drownW
And the little child go freeC
