A grievous day of wrathful windsA
Of low hung clouds which scud and flyB
And drop cold rains then lift and showC
A sullen realm of upper skyB
-
The sea is black as night it roarsD
From lips afoam with cruel sprayE
Like some fierce many throated packF
Of wolves which scents and chases preyE
-
Crouched in my little wind swept nookG
I hear the menacing voices callH
And shudder as above the deckI
Topples and swings the weltering wallH
-
It seems a vast and restless graveJ
Insatiate hungry beckoningK
With dreadful gesture of commandL
To every free and living thingK
-
O Lord I cry Thou makest lifeM
And hope and all sweet things to beN
Rebuke this hovering following DeathO
This horror never born of TheeN
-
A sudden gleam the waves light upP
With radiant momentary huesQ
Amber and shadowy pearl and goldR
Opal and green and unknown bluesQ
-
And rising on the tossing wallsS
Within the foaming valleys swungT
Soft shapes of sea birds dimly seenU
Flutter and float and call their youngT
-
A moment then the lowering cloudsV
Settle anew above the mainW
The colors die the waves rise higherX
And night and terror rule againY
-
No more I see the small dim shapesZ
So unafraid of wind and waveJ
Nestling beneath the tempest's roarA2
Cradled in what I deemed a graveJ
-
But all night long I lay and smiledB2
At thought of those soft folded wingsC2
And trusting with the trustful birdsD2
In Him who cares for smallest thingsC2
