After-glow. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBCC DEEFF GHHII JKKLL MNNNN DMMNN OPPNN NQQRR GLLNNMy morn was all dewy rose and pearl | A |
Peace brimmed the skies a cool and fragrant air | B |
Caressed my going forth and everywhere | B |
The radiant webs by hope and fancy spun | C |
Stretched shining in the sun | C |
- | |
Then came a noon hot breathless still | D |
No wind to visit the dew thirsty flowers | E |
Only the dust the road the urging hours | E |
And pressing on I never guessed or knew | F |
That day was half way through | F |
- | |
And when the pomp of purple lit the sky | G |
And sheaves of golden lances tipped with red | H |
Danced in the west wondering I gazed and said | H |
Lo a new morning comes my hopes to crown | I |
Sudden the sun dropped down | I |
- | |
Like a great golden ball into the sea | J |
Which made room laughing and the serried rank | K |
Of yellow lances flashed and turning sank | K |
After their chieftain as he led the way | L |
And all the heaven was gray | L |
- | |
Startled and pale I stood to see them go | M |
Then a long stealing shadow to me crept | N |
And laid his cold hand on me and I wept | N |
And hid my eyes and shivered with affright | N |
At thought of coming night | N |
- | |
But as I wept and shuddered a warm thrill | D |
Smote on my sense I raised my eyes and lo | M |
The skies so dim but now were all aglow | M |
With a new flush of tender rose and gold | N |
Opening fold on fold | N |
- | |
Higher and higher soared the gracious beam | O |
Deeper and deeper glowed the heavenly hues | P |
Nor any cowering shadow could refuse | P |
The beautiful embrace which clasped and kissed | N |
Its dun to amethyst | N |
- | |
A little longer and the lovely light | N |
Draining the last drops from its wondrous urn | Q |
Departed and the swart shades in their turn | Q |
Impatient of the momentary mirth | R |
Crowded to seize the earth | R |
- | |
No longer do I shudder With calm eye | G |
I front the night nor wish its hours away | L |
For in that message from my banished day | L |
I read his pledge of dawn and soon or late | N |
I can endure to wait | N |
