There is mist on the mountain and night on the valeA
But more dark is the sleep of the sons of the GaelA
A stranger commanded it sunk on the landB
It has frozen each heart and benumb'd every handB
-
The dirk and the target lie sordid with dustC
The bloodless claymore is but redden'd with rustC
On the hill or the glen if a gun should appearD
It is only to war with the heath cock or deerD
-
The deeds of our sires if our bards should rehearseE
Let a blush or a blow be the meed of their verseE
Be mute every string and be hush'd every toneF
That shall bid us remember the fame that is flownF
-
But the dark hours of night and of slumber are pastG
The morn on our mountains is dawning at lastG
Glenaladale's peaks are illumined with the raysH
And the streams of Glenfinnan leap bright in the blazeH
-
O high minded Moray the exiled the dearD
In the blush of the dawning the Standard uprearD
Wide wide on the winds of the north let it flyI
Like the sun s latest flash when the tempest is nighI
-
Ye sons of the strong when that dawning shall breakJ
Need the harp of the aged remind you to wakeJ
That dawn never beam'd on your forefathers' eyeI
But it roused each high chieftain to vanquish or dieI
-
O sprung from the Kings who in Islay kept stateK
Proud chiefs of Clan Ranald Glengarry and SleatK
Combine like three streams from one mountain of snowL
And resistless in union rush down on the foeL
-
True son of Sir Evan undaunted LochielI
Place thy targe on thy shoulder and burnish thy steelI
Rough Keppoch give breath to thy bugle's bold swellI
Till far Coryarrick resound to the knellI
-
Stern son of Lord Kenneth high chief of KintailI
Let the stag in thy standard bound wild in the galeI
May the race of Clan Gillean the fearless and freeD
Remember Glenlivat Harlaw and DundeeD
-
Let the clan of grey Fingon whose offspring has givenM
Such heroes to earth and such martyrs to heavenM
Unite with the race of renown'd Rorri MoreD
To launch the long galley and stretch to the oarD
-
How Mac Shimei will joy when their chief shall displayI
The yew crested bonnet o'er tresses of greyI
How the race of wrong'd Alpine and murder d GlencoeJ
Shall shout for revenge when they pour on the foeL
-
Ye sons of brown Dermid who slew the wild boarD
Resume the pure faith of the great Callum MoreD
MacNeil of the islands and Moy of the LakeJ
For honour for freedom for vengeance awakeJ
-
Awake on your hills on your islands awakeJ
Brave sons of the mountain the frith and the lakeJ
'Tis the bugle but not for the chase is the callI
'Tis the pibroch s shrill summons but not to the hallI
-
'Tis the summons of heroes for conquest or deathN
When the banners are blazing on mountain and heathO
They call to the dirk the claymore and the targeP
To the march and the muster the line and the chargeP
-
Be the brand of each chieftain like Fin's in his ireD
May the blood through his veins flow like currents of fireD
Burst the base foreign yoke as your sires did of yoreD
Or die like your sires and endure it no moreD
