Farewell To The Muse Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD DEDECFCF CGCGHIHJ

Enchantress farewell who so oft hast decoy'd meA
At the close of the evening through woodlands to roamB
Where the forester 'lated with wonder espied meA
Explore the wild scenes he was quitting for homeB
Farewell and take with thee thy numbers wild speakingC
The language alternate of rapture and woeD
Oh none but some lover whose heartstrings are breakingC
The pang that I feel at our parting can knowD
-
Each joy thou couldst double and when there came sorrowD
Or pale disappointment to darken my wayE
What voice was like thine that could sing of tomorrowD
Till forgot in the strain was the grief of todayE
But when friends drop around us in life's weary waningC
The grief Queen of Numbers thou canst not assuageF
Nor the gradual estrangement of those yet remainingC
The languor of pain and the chillness of ageF
-
'Twas thou that once taught me accents bewailingC
To sing how a warrior I lay stretch'd on the plainG
And a maiden hung o'er him with aid unavailingC
And held to his lips the cold goblet in vainG
As vain thy enchantments O Queen of wild NumbersH
To a bard when the reign of his fancy is o'erI
And the quick pulse of feeling in apathy slumbersH
Farewell then Enchantress I'll meet thee no moreJ
