On Christmas eve the bells were rungA
The damsel donned her kirtle sheenB
The hall was dressed with holly greenB
Forth to the wood did merry men goC
To gather in the mistletoeC
Thus opened wide the baron hallD
To vassal tenant serf and allD
Power laid his rod of rule asideE
And ceremony doffed his prideE
The heir with roses in his shoesF
That night might village partner chooseF
The lord underogating shareG
The vulgar game of Post and PairG
All hailed with uncontrolled delightH
And general voice the happy nightH
That to the cottage as the crownI
Brought tidings of salvation downI
-
The fire with well dried logs suppliedE
Went roaring up the chimney wideE
The huge hall table's oaken faceJ
Scrubbed till it shone the day to graceJ
Bore then upon its massive boardK
No mark to part the squire and lordK
Then was brought in the lusty brawnL
By old blue coated serving manM
Then the grim boar's head frowned on highN
Crested with bays and rosemaryO
Well can the green garbed ranger tellP
How when and where the monster fellP
What dogs before his death he toreQ
And all the baitings of the boarQ
The wassal round in good brown bowlsR
Garnished with ribbons blithely trowlsR
There the huge sirloin reeked hard byN
Plum porridge stood and Christmas pyeN
Nor failed old Scotland to produceR
At such high tide her savory gooseR
-
Then came the merry maskers inS
And carols roared with blithesome dinS
If unmelodious was the songT
It was a hearty note and strongT
Who lists may in their murmuring seeR
Traces of ancient mysteryR
White shirts supplied the masqueradeU
And smutted cheeks the visors madeU
But O wht maskers richly dightU
Can boast of bosoms half so lightU
