Give me my scallop shell of quietA
My staff of faith to walk uponB
My scrip of joy immortal dietA
My bottle of salvationC
My gown of glory hope's true gageD
And thus I'll take my pilgrimageE
-
Blood must be my body's balmerF
No other balm will there be givenC
Whilst my soul like a white palmerF
Travels to the land of heavenC
Over the silver mountainsG
Where spring the nectar fountainsG
And there I'll kissH
The bowl of blissH
And drink my eternal fillI
On every milken hillI
My soul will be a dry beforeJ
But after it will ne'er thirst moreJ
And by the happy blissful wayK
More peaceful pilgrims I shall seeL
That have shook off their gowns of clayK
And go apparelled fresh like meL
I'll bring them firstM
To slake their thirstM
And then to taste those nectar sucketsL
At the clear wellsL
Where sweetness dwellsL
Drawn up by saints in crystal bucketsL
-
And when our bottles and all weL
Are fill'd with immortalityL
Then the holy paths we'll travelN
Strew'd with rubies thick as gravelN
Ceilings of diamonds sapphire floorsL
High walls of coral and pearl bowersL
-
From thence to heaven's bribeless hallO
Where no corrupted voices brawlO
No conscience molten into goldP
Nor forg'd accusers bought and soldP
No cause deferr'd nor vain spent journeyL
For there Christ is the king's attorneyL
Who pleads for all without degreesL
And he hath angels but no feesL
When the grand twelve million juryL
Of our sins and sinful furyL
'Gainst our souls black verdicts giveQ
Christ pleads his death and then we liveR
Be thou my speaker taintless pleaderL
Unblotted lawyer true proceederL
Thou movest salvation even for almsL
Not with a bribed lawyer's palmsL
And this is my eternal pleaL
To him that made heaven earth and seaL
Seeing my flesh must die so soonS
And want a head to dine next noonS
Just at the stroke when my veins start and spreadT
Set on my soul an everlasting headT
Then am I ready like a palmer fitU
To tread those blest paths which before I writU
