I was a PoetA
But I did not know itB
Neither did my MotherC
Nor my Sister nor my BrotherC
The Rich were not aware of itB
The Poor took no care of itB
The Reverend Mr DrewittB
Never knew itB
The High did not suspect itB
The Low could not detect itB
Aunt SueD
Said it was obviously untrueD
Uncle NedB
Said I was off my headB
This from a ColonialE
Was really a good testimonialE
Still everybody seemed to thinkF
That genius owes a good deal to drinkF
So that is howG
I am not a poet nowG
And whyH
My inspiration has run dryH
It is no sort of useI
To cultivate the MuseJ
If vulgar peopleE
Can't tell a village pump from a church steepleE
I am merely apologizingK
For the lack of the surprisingK
In what I writeB
To nightB
I am quite well meaningK
But a lot of things are always interveningK
BetweenL
What I meanL
And what it is saidB
I had in my headB
It is all very puzzlingK
Uncle NedB
Says Poets need muzzlingK
He mightB
Be rightB
Good nightB
