A Literature Lesson. Sir Patrick Spens In The Eighteenth Century Manner Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BBCCDDEE FFGGHHIIJJBBKK A LLMMNN

VERSE IA
-
In a famed town of Caledonia's landB
A prosperous port contiguous to the strandB
A monarch feasted in right royal stateC
But care still dogs the pleasures of the GreatC
And well his faithful servants could surmiseD
From his distracted looks and broken sighsD
That though the purple bowl was circling freeE
His mind was prey to black perplexityE
-
At last while others thoughtless joys invokeF
Fierce from his breast the laboured utterance brokeF
Alas he cried and what to me the gainG
Though I am king of all this fair domainG
Though Ceres minister her plenteous hoardH
And Bacchus with his bounty crowns my boardH
If Neptune still reluctant to obeyI
Neglects my sceptre and denies my swayI
On a far mission must my vessels urgeJ
Their course impetuous o'er the boiling surgeJ
But who shall guide them with a dextrous handB
And bring them safely to that distant landB
Whose skill shall dare the perils of the deepK
And beard the Sea god in his stormy keepK

VERSE IIA
-
He spake and straightway rising from his sideL
An ancient senator of reverend prideL
Unsealed his lips and uttered from his soulM
Great store of flatulence and rigmaroleM
All fled the Court which shades of night investN
And Pope and Gay and Prior told the restN
