By O r K mA
Wake for the closed Pavilion doors have keptB
Their silence while the white eyed Kaffir sleptB
And wailed the Nightingale with 'Jug jug jug 'C
Whereat for empty cup the White Rose weptB
Enter with me where yonder door hangs outD
Its Red Triangle to a world of droughtD
Inviting to the Palace of the DjinnE
Where Death Aladdin waits as ChuckeroutD
Methought last night that one in suit of woeF
Stood by the Tavern door and whispered 'LoG
The Pledge departed what avails the CupH
Then take the Pledge and let the Wine cup go 'C
But I 'For every thirsty soul that drainsI
This Anodyne of Thought its rim containsI
Free will the can Necessity the mustD
Pour off the must and see the can remainsI
'Then pot or glass why label it 'With Care'J
Or why your Sheepskin with my Gourd compareJ
Lo here the Bar and I the only JudgeK
O Dog that bit me I exact an hair 'C
We are the Sum of things who jot our scoreJ
With Caesar's clay behind the Tavern doorJ
And Alexander's armies where are theyL
But gone to Pot that Pot you push for moreJ
And this same Jug I empty could it speakM
Might whisper that itself had been a BeakM
And dealt me Fourteen Days 'without the Op 'C
Your Worship see my lip is on your cheekM
Yourself condemned to three score years and tenE
Say did you judge the ways of other menE
Why now sir you are hourly filled with wineE
And has the clay more licence now than thenE
Life is a draught good sir its brevityD
Gives you and me our measures and therebyN
Has docked your virtue to a tankard's spanE
And left of my criterion a Cri'J
