The Road Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEDEFF GHGIJKJK

The road is thronged with women soldiers passA
And halt but never see them yet they're hereB
A patient crowd along the sodden grassA
Silent worn out with waiting sick with fearC
The road goes crawling up a long hillsideD
All ruts and stones and sludge and the emptied dregsE
Of battle thrown in heaps Here where they diedD
Are stretched big bellied horses with stiff legsE
And dead men bloody fingered from the fightF
Stare up at caverned darkness winking whiteF
-
You in the bomb scorched kilt poor sprawling JockG
You tottered here and fell and stumbled onH
Half dazed for want of sleep No dream would mockG
Your reeling brain with comforts lost and goneI
You did not feel her arms about your kneesJ
Her blind caress her lips upon your headK
Too tired for thoughts of home and love and easeJ
The road would serve you well enough for bedK
