The Redeemer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCCDD EFEFFGHGH IJIJJKLKL MFNFFOOP

Darkness the rain sluiced down the mire was deepA
It was past twelve on a mid winter nightB
When peaceful folk in beds lay snug asleepA
There with much work to do before the lightB
We lugged our clay sucked boots as best we mightB
Along the trench sometimes a bullet sangC
And droning shells burst with a hollow bangC
We were soaked chilled and wretched every oneD
Darkness the distant wink of a huge gunD
-
I turned in the black ditch loathing the stormE
A rocket fizzed and burned with blanching flareF
And lit the face of what had been a formE
Floundering in mirk He stood before me thereF
I say that He was Christ stiff in the glareF
And leaning forward from His burdening taskG
Both arms supporting it His eyes on mineH
Stared from the woeful head that seemed a maskG
Of mortal pain in Hell's unholy shineH
-
No thorny crown only a woollen capI
He wore an English soldier white and strongJ
Who loved his time like any simple chapI
Good days of work and sport and homely songJ
Now he has learned that nights are very longJ
And dawn a watching of the windowed skyK
But to the end unjudging he'll endureL
Horror and pain not uncontent to dieK
That Lancaster on Lune may stand secureL
-
He faced me reeling in his wearinessM
Shouldering his load of planks so hard to bearF
I say that He was Christ who wrought to blessN
All groping things with freedom bright as airF
And with His mercy washed and made them fairF
Then the flame sank and all grew black as pitchO
While we began to struggle along the ditchO
And someone flung his burden in the muckP
Mumbling 'O Christ Almighty now I'm stuck '-
