Rhyme Scheme: A BCC DEDE FGGFHIHIJJK KCKKCCB

Hindenburg Line AprilA
-
-
Groping along the tunnel step by stepB
He winked his prying torch with patching glareC
From side to side and sniffed the unwholesome airC
-
Tins boxes bottles shapes too vague to knowD
A mirror smashed the mattress from a bedE
And he exploring fifty feet belowD
The rosy gloom of battle overheadE
-
Tripping he grabbed the wall saw some one lieF
Humped at his feet half hidden by a rugG
And stooped to give the sleeper's arm a tugG
I'm looking for headquarters No replyF
God blast your neck For days he'd had no sleepH
Get up and guide me through this stinking placeI
Savage he kicked a soft unanswering heapH
And flashed his beam across the livid faceI
Terribly glaring up whose eyes yet woreJ
Agony dying hard ten days beforeJ
And fists of fingers clutched a blackening woundK
-
Alone he staggered on until he foundK
Dawn's ghost that filtered down a shafted stairC
To the dazed muttering creatures undergroundK
Who hear the boom of shells in muffled soundK
At last with sweat of horror in his hairC
He climbed through darkness to the twilight airC
Unloading hell behind him step by stepB
