Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGH IJKKLMN OPJQRSTUVWXYHZA2B2C2 D2E2F2G2UH2F2

Now light the candles one two there's a mothA
What silly beggars they are to blunder inB
And scorch their wings with glory liquid flameC
No no not that it's bad to think of warD
When thoughts you've gagged all day come back to scare youE
And it's been proved that soldiers don't go madF
Unless they lose control of ugly thoughtsG
That drive them out to jabber among the treesH
-
Now light your pipe look what a steady handI
Draw a deep breath stop thinking count fifteenJ
And you're as right as rainK
Why won't it rainK
I wish there'd be a thunder storm to nightL
With bucketsful of water to sluice the darkM
And make the roses hang their dripping headsN
-
Books what a jolly company they areO
Standing so quiet and patient on their shelvesP
Dressed in dim brown and black and white and greenJ
And every kind of colour Which will you readQ
Come on O do read something they're so wiseR
I tell you all the wisdom of the worldS
Is waiting for you on those shelves and yetT
You sit and gnaw your nails and let your pipe outU
And listen to the silence on the ceilingV
There's one big dizzy moth that bumps and fluttersW
And in the breathless air outside the houseX
The garden waits for something that delaysY
There must be crowds of ghosts among the treesH
Not people killed in battle they're in FranceZ
But horrible shapes in shrouds old men who diedA2
Slow natural deaths old men with ugly soulsB2
Who wore their bodies out with nasty sinsC2
-
You're quiet and peaceful summering safe at homeD2
You'd never think there was a bloody war onE2
O yes you would why you can hear the gunsF2
Hark Thud thud thud quite soft they never ceaseG2
Those whispering guns O Christ I want to go outU
And screech at them to stop I'm going crazyH2
I'm going stark staring mad because of the gunsF2
