Hero Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DEDEFF GGHHII

'Jack fell as he'd have wished ' the Mother saidA
And folded up the letter that she'd readA
'The Colonel writes so nicely ' Something brokeB
In the tired voice that quavered to a chokeB
She half looked up 'We mothers are so proudC
Of our dead soldiers ' Then her face was bowedC
-
Quietly the Brother Officer went outD
He'd told the poor old dear some gallant liesE
That she would nourish all her days no doubtD
For while he coughed and mumbled her weak eyesE
Had shone with gentle triumph brimmed with joyF
Because he'd been so brave her glorious boyF
-
He thought how 'Jack' cold footed useless swineG
Had panicked down the trench that night the mineG
Went up at Wicked Corner how he'd triedH
To get sent home and how at last he diedH
Blown to small bits And no one seemed to careI
Except that lonely woman with white hairI
