The Song Of The Chattahoochee. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEECAB AB BE FEA ABGBGHHGA ABIBIJJIAB ABCBCKKCAB

Out of the hills of HabershamA
Down the valleys of HallB
I hurry amain to reach the plainC
Run the rapid and leap the fallB
Split at the rock and together againD
Accept my bed or narrow or wideE
And flee from folly on every sideE
With a lover's pain to attain the plainC
Far from the hills of HabershamA
Far from the valleys of HallB
-
All down the hills of HabershamA
All through the valleys of HallB
The rushes cried Abide abide '-
The willful waterweeds held me thrallB
The laving laurel turned my tideE
The ferns and the fondling grass said Stay '-
The dewberry dipped for to work delayF
And the little reeds sighed Abide abideE
Here in the hills of HabershamA
Here in the valleys of Hall '-
-
High o'er the hills of HabershamA
Veiling the valleys of HallB
The hickory told me manifoldG
Fair tales of shade the poplar tallB
Wrought me her shadowy self to holdG
The chestnut the oak the walnut the pineH
Overleaning with flickering meaning and signH
Said Pass not so cold these manifoldG
Deep shades of the hills of HabershamA
These glades in the valleys of Hall '-
-
And oft in the hills of HabershamA
And oft in the valleys of HallB
The white quartz shone and the smooth brook stoneI
Did bar me of passage with friendly brawlB
And many a luminous jewel loneI
Crystals clear or a cloud with mistJ
Ruby garnet and amethystJ
Made lures with the lights of streaming stoneI
In the clefts of the hills of HabershamA
In the beds of the valleys of HallB
-
But oh not the hills of HabershamA
And oh not the valleys of HallB
Avail I am fain for to water the plainC
Downward the voices of Duty callB
Downward to toil and be mixed with the mainC
The dry fields burn and the mills are to turnK
And a myriad flowers mortally yearnK
And the lordly main from beyond the plainC
Calls o'er the hills of HabershamA
Calls through the valleys of HallB
