Opinion let me alone I am not thineA
Prim Creed with categoric point forbearB
To feature me my Lord by rule and lineA
Thou canst not measure Mistress Nature's hairB
Not one sweet inch nay if thy sight is sharpC
Would'st count the strings upon an angel's harpC
Forbear forbearB
-
Oh let me love my Lord more fathom deepD
Than there is line to sound with let me loveE
My fellow not as men that mandates keepD
Yea all that's lovable below aboveE
That let me love by heart by heart becauseF
Free from the penal pressure of the lawsF
I find it fairB
-
The tears I weep by day and bitter nightG
Opinion for thy sole salt vintage fallH
As morn by morn I rise with fresh delightG
Time through my casement cheerily doth callH
'Nature is new 'tis birthday every dayI
Come feast with me let no man say me nayI
Whate'er befall '-
-
So fare I forth to feast I sit besideJ
Some brother bright but ere good morrow's passedK
Burly Opinion wedging in hath criedJ
'Thou shalt not sit by us to break thy fastK
Save to our Rubric thou subscribe and swearB
'Religion hath blue eyes and yellow hair '-
She's Saxon all '-
-
Then hard a hungered for my brother's graceL
Till well nigh fain to swear his folly's trueB
In sad dissent I turn my longing faceL
To him that sits on the left 'Brother with you '-
'Nay not with me save thou subscribe and swearB
'Religion hath black eyes and raven hair '-
Nought else is true '-
-
Debarred of banquets that my heart could makeM
With every man on every day of lifeN
I homeward turn my fires of pain to slakeM
In deep endearments of a worshipped wifeN
'I love thee well dear Love ' quoth she 'and yetO
Would that thy creed with mine completely metO
As one not two '-
-
Assassin Thief Opinion 'tis thy workM
By Church by throne by hearth by every goodP
That's in the Town of Time I see thee lurkM
And e'er some shadow stays where thou hast stoodP
Thou hand'st sweet Socrates his hemlock sourB
Thou sav'st Barabbas in that hideous hourB
And stabb'st the goodP
-
Deliverer Christ thou rack'st the souls of menQ
Thou tossest girls to lions and boys to flamesR
Thou hew'st Crusader down by SaracenQ
Thou buildest closets full of secret shamesR
Indifferent cruel thou dost blow the blazeS
Round Ridley or Servetus all thy daysS
Smell scorched I wouldP
-
Thou base born Accident of time and placeL
Bigot Pretender unto Judgment's throneQ
Bastard that claimest with a cunning faceL
Those rights the true true Son of Man doth ownQ
By Love's authority thou Rebel coldT
At head of civil wars and quarrels oldT
Thou Knife on a throneQ
-
I would thou left'st me free to live with loveE
And faith that through the love of love doth findU
My Lord's dear presence in the stars aboveE
The clods below the flesh without the mindU
Within the bread the tear the smileV
Opinion damned Intriguer gray with guileV
Let me aloneQ
