At First: To Charlotte Cushman Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

My crippled sense fares bow'd alongA
His uncompanioned wayB
And wronged by death pays life with wrongA
And I wake by night and dream by dayB
-
And the Morning seems but fatigued NightC
That hath wept his visage paleD
And the healthy mark 'twixt dark and lightC
In sickly sameness out doth failD
-
And the woods stare strange and the wind is dumbE
O Wind pray talk againF
And the Hand of the Frost spreads stark and numbE
As Death's on the deadened window paneG
-
Still dumb thou Wind old voluble friendH
And the middle of the day is coldI
And the heart of eve beats lax i' the endH
As a legend's climax poorly toldI
-
Oh vain the up straining of the handsJ
In the chamber late at nightC
Oh vain the complainings the hot demandsJ
The prayers for a sound the tears for a sightC
-
No word from over the starry lineK
No motion felt in the darkL
And never a day gives ever a signK
Or a dream sets seal with palpable markL
-
And O my God how slight it wereM
How nothing thou All to theeN
That a kiss or a whisper might fall from herM
Down by the way of Time to meN
-
Or some least grace of the body of loveO
Mere wafture of floating byP
Mere sense of unseen smiling aboveO
Mere hint sincere of a large blue eyeP
-
Mere dim receipt of sad delightC
From Nearness warm in the airQ
What time with the passing of the nightC
She also passed somehow somewhereQ
-
