Down mildest shores of milk white sandA
By cape and fair Floridian bayB
Twixt billowy pines a surf asleep on landA
And the great Gulf at playB
-
Past far off palms that filmed to noughtA
Or in and out the cunning keysC
That laced the land like fragile patterns wroughtA
To edge old broideriesC
-
The sail sighed on all day for joyD
The prow each pouting wave did leaveE
All smile and song with sheen and ripple coyD
Till the dusk diver EveE
-
Brought up from out the brimming EastA
The oval moon a perfect pearlF
In that large lustre all our haste surceasedA
The sail seemed fain to furlF
-
The silent steersman landward turnedA
And ship and shore set breast to breastA
Under a palm wherethrough a planet burnedA
We ate and sank to restA
-
But soon from sleep's dear death it seemedA
I rose and strolled along the seaC
Down silver distances that faintly gleamedA
On to infinityC
-
Till suddenly I paused for loF
A shape from whence I ne'er divinedC
Appeared before me pacing to and froF
With head far down inclinedC
-
'A wraith' I thought 'that walks the shoreG
To solve some old perplexity '-
Full heavy hung the draggled gown he woreG
His hair flew all awryH
-
He waited not as ghosts oft useC
To be 'dearheaven'd ' and 'oh'd '-
But briskly said Good evenin' what's the newsC
Consumption After boa'dC
-
Or mebbe you're intendin' ofI
Investments Orange plantin' PineJ
Hotel or Sanitarium What aboveI
This yea'th CAN be your lineJ
-
Speakin' of sanitariums nowK
Jest look 'ee here my friendC
I know a little story well I swowL
Wait till you hear the endC
-
Some year or more ago I s'poseC
I roamed from Maine to FloridyC
And see where them Palmettos growsC
I bought that little keyC
-
Cal'latin' for to build right offM
A c'lossal sanitariumN
Big surf Gulf breeze Jest death upon a coughO
I run it high to humN
-
Well sir I went to work in styleF
Bought me a steamboat loaded itC
With my hotel pyazers more'n a mileF
Already framed and fitC
-
Insured 'em fetched 'em safe aroundC
Put up my buildin' moored my boatC
COM plete then went to bed and slept as soundC
As if I'd paid a noteC
-
Now on that very night a squallF
Cum up from some'eres some bad placeC
An' blowed an' tore an' reared an' pitched an' allF
I had to run a raceC
-
Right out o' bed from that hotelF
An' git to yonder risin' groundC
For 'twixt the sea that riz and rain that fellF
I pooty nigh was drownedC
-
An' thar I stood till mornin' cumN
Right on yon little knoll of sandC
FreQUENTly wishin' I had stayed to humN
Fur from this tarnal landC
-
When mornin' cum I took a goodC
Long look and well sir sure's I'm MEN
That boat laid right whar that hotel had stoodC
And HIT sailed out to seaN
-
No I'll not keep you good bye friendC
Don't think about it much preehapsN
Your brain might git see sawin' end for endC
Like them asylum chapsN
-
For here I walk forevermoreH
A tryin' to make it geeN
How one same wind could blow my ship to shoreH
And my hotel to seaN
-
