By cape and fair Floridian bay | B |
Twixt billowy pines a surf asleep on land | A |
And the great Gulf at play | B |
- | |
Past far off palms that filmed to nought | A |
Or in and out the cunning keys | C |
That laced the land like fragile patterns wrought | A |
To edge old broideries | C |
- | |
The sail sighed on all day for joy | D |
The prow each pouting wave did leave | E |
All smile and song with sheen and ripple coy | D |
Till the dusk diver Eve | E |
- | |
Brought up from out the brimming East | A |
The oval moon a perfect pearl | F |
In that large lustre all our haste surceased | A |
The sail seemed fain to furl | F |
- | |
The silent steersman landward turned | A |
And ship and shore set breast to breast | A |
Under a palm wherethrough a planet burned | A |
We ate and sank to rest | A |
- | |
But soon from sleep's dear death it seemed | A |
I rose and strolled along the sea | C |
Down silver distances that faintly gleamed | A |
On to infinity | C |
- | |
Till suddenly I paused for lo | F |
A shape from whence I ne'er divined | C |
Appeared before me pacing to and fro | F |
With head far down inclined | C |
- | |
'A wraith' I thought 'that walks the shore | G |
To solve some old perplexity ' | - |
Full heavy hung the draggled gown he wore | G |
His hair flew all awry | H |
- | |
He waited not as ghosts oft use | C |
To be 'dearheaven'd ' and 'oh'd ' | - |
But briskly said Good evenin' what's the news | C |
Consumption After boa'd | C |
- | |
Or mebbe you're intendin' of | I |
Investments Orange plantin' Pine | J |
Hotel or Sanitarium What above | I |
This yea'th CAN be your line | J |
- | |
Speakin' of sanitariums now | K |
Jest look 'ee here my friend | C |

Wait till you hear the end | C |
- | |
Some year or more ago I s'pose | C |

And see where them Palmettos grows | C |
I bought that little key | C |
- | |
Cal'latin' for to build right off | M |
A c'lossal sanitarium | N |
Big surf Gulf breeze Jest death upon a cough | O |
I run it high to hum | N |
- | |
Well sir I went to work in style | F |
Bought me a steamboat loaded it | C |
With my hotel pyazers more'n a mile | F |
Already framed and fit | C |
- | |
Insured 'em fetched 'em safe around | C |
Put up my buildin' moored my boat | C |
COM plete then went to bed and slept as sound | C |
As if I'd paid a note | C |
- | |
Now on that very night a squall | F |
Cum up from some'eres some bad place | C |
An' blowed an' tore an' reared an' pitched an' all | F |
I had to run a race | C |
- | |
Right out o' bed from that hotel | F |
An' git to yonder risin' ground | C |
For 'twixt the sea that riz and rain that fell | F |
I pooty nigh was drowned | C |
- | |
An' thar I stood till mornin' cum | N |
Right on yon little knoll of sand | C |
FreQUENTly wishin' I had stayed to hum | N |
Fur from this tarnal land | C |
- | |
When mornin' cum I took a good | C |
Long look and well sir sure's I'm ME | N |
That boat laid right whar that hotel had stood | C |
And HIT sailed out to sea | N |
- | |
No I'll not keep you good bye friend | C |
Don't think about it much preehaps | N |
Your brain might git see sawin' end for end | C |
Like them asylum chaps | N |
- | |
For here I walk forevermore | H |
A tryin' to make it gee | N |
How one same wind could blow my ship to shore | H |
And my hotel to sea | N |
