Here Will I Take My Rest Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCA DEDEFFD GHGHIJG KLKLMML NONOPPNMy lady that did change this house of mine | A |
Into a heaven when that she dwelt therein | B |
From head to foot an angel's grace divine | A |
Enwrapped her pure she was spotless of sin | B |
Fair as the moon her countenance and wise | C |
Lords of the kind and tender glance her eyes | C |
With an abounding loveliness did shine | A |
- | |
Then said my heart Here will I take my rest | D |
This city breathes her love in every part | E |
But to a distant bourne was she addressed | D |
Alas he knew it not alas poor heart | E |
The influence of some cold malignant star | F |
Has loosed my hand that held her lone and far | F |
She joumeyeth that lay upon my breast | D |
- | |
Not only did she lift my bosom's veil | G |
Reveal its inmost secret but her grace | H |
Drew back the curtain from Heaven's mansions pale | G |
And gave her there an eternal dwelling place | H |
The flower strewn river lip and meadows fair | I |
The rose herself but fleeting treasures were | J |
Regret and Winter follow in their trail | G |
- | |
Dear were the days which perished with my friend | K |
Ah what is left of life now she is dead | L |
All wisdomless and profitless I spend | K |
The nightingale his own life's blood doth shed | L |
When to the kisses of the wind the morn | M |
Unveils the rose's splendour with his torn | M |
And jealous breast he dyes her petals red | L |
- | |
Yet pardon her oh Heart for poor wert thou | N |
A humble dervish on the dusty way | O |
Crowned with the crown of empire was her brow | N |
And in the realms of beauty she bore sway | O |
But all the joy that Hafiz' hand might hold | P |
Lay in the beads that morn and eve he told | P |
Worn with God's praise and see he holds it now | N |
