My Country My people Modern Indian EpicA
Canto PoemB
-
A hand rises out of the dawn the handC
-
of the toiler of time it is raised dipped in theD
-
Blood and sweat of human fields it scatters sindoorE
-
to long shadows and distancesF
-
I open my eyes and from my little windowG
-
greet the birds and clouds flying about in the airE
-
I fling a sigh at them that all my dreamsH
-
Are only their wings I share the loving gift ofI
-
Sun my day with themJ
-
I am born out of the grainK
-
I live for the grain and dead I go back into the grain I makeL
-
Poems with molecules of sounds and like glassM
-
Made out of particles of sand lilt them into tunesN
-
-
-
With yarn which dreams of colours IO
-
Weave saris to drape women of my country andP
-
Release them like butterflies in the meadows ofI
-
Human lifeQ
-
-
-
I make ships launch them in the oceansR
-
To carry and go flying my people s flagsS
-
-
-
I lay roads into dreams I build mansionsR
-
Into the clouds with my life I raise massive wallsT
-
On the frontiers of my country high into the chestU
-
Of our enemiesV
-
-
-
I give shapes forms and voices to rocksW
-
And release them from silences I plough all theD
-
Fields of human life what beauty have I notX
-
Created with this hand What thing on earth didY
-
Not surrender to this hand But this hand hasZ
-
Remained ever emptyA2
-
I had no place in bygone history and theD
-
Present history has no scruples Why I build damsB2
-
Why I till lands I do not knowG
-
I live in zero but I walk along ManC2
-
Man is the walking tree whose roots have changedD2
-
Into legs Had I remained a tree I could have hadE2
-
A spring every year having become a man I haveF2
-
Lost all the springs on earthG2
-
-
-
From my childhood trees have beenH2
-
growing roads have been walking towns andP
-
villages have been jumping and dancing in joyI2
-
but I walk alone with empty hands in my countryA2
-
where I have nothing of my own only myO
-
-
-
memories to follow behind me with myself as the leaderE
-
of the procession and my burningJ2
-
red desire flying as my flagK2
