Gorilla – 15 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEBFGBBHII

This country that thundered like the dark rain cloud once why is it mewing like a cat today This country which held the throats of aggressors and exploiters in its fists once why is it placing its feet willingly in chains todayA
Oh In one minute the earth drank up all those drops of blood which rained on it only yesterday Freedom here is again starving and is eating grass to appease its appetite like cattle if we want to carve out a new country where is that man the basic brick of the future His strong body and his muscles are both prisoners in the chains of cowardice and unscrupulousnessB
Those iron fists which held ploughs and guns hold today the feet of the leader the modern version of the ancient Greek Cyclops those hands which mulched milk and fed the mouths of young generations are mulching all the nights to wash his feet with moonshine with one stroke how to fell to the ground the head of that brute sitting in the chairC
We build assemblies we construct the academies and we raise tall minarets to the glory of our nation we install him in the chair and surrender ourselves to be crushed under his bricks We weave halos of light around his head and become his priestD
O Men know what you are doingE
O farmers the political rain is falling Do not sow your seeds in haste lest you be cheated again Look in the streets not able to bear the stink the statues attempt to jump down and run away but cruel time has crippled them into being mere stonesB
The gypsy revolution wanderer of all the lands of the earth will also visit our streetF
Even children are dreaming of bombs in their sleeps They are turning away their face even if we show them the moonG
Abhorring philosophy they are running towards revolution fathers and mothers are opening their old chest and searching into their sorrows with fumbling fingersB
To their eyes the sky thick with stars looks like a body smitten with small poxB
That angel of morning for whom we have been waiting with tense fists is rousing in each heart worlds of great explosions In towns and villages and in continents beyond the light if its impeding dawn is spreading It cannot be quenched by throwing languages on it It cannot be muffled by covering countries over it It cannot be crushed by throwing javelins of castes and nationalities against itH
Believe me the day is fast approaching when Gorilla shall lay man s pain on its lap and rip open its bellyI
March ahead I bless you that your hands should acquire the power to build your own paradise And that your heart should wear the flesh of courage and Gorilla should rise to his full height with in your bodyI
