The Soul's Prayer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFE GHGH IJIJ KLKL MNM

In childhood's pride I said to TheeA
'O Thou who mad'st me of Thy breathB
Speak Master and reveal to meA
Thine inmost laws of life and deathB
-
'Give me to drink each joy and painC
Which Thine eternal hand can meteD
For my insatiate soul can drainC
Earth's utmost bitter utmost sweetD
-
'Spare me no bliss no pang of strifeE
Withhold no gift or grief I craveF
The intricate lore of love and lifeE
And mystic knowledge of the grave '-
-
Lord Thou didst answer stern and lowG
'Child I will hearken to thy prayerH
And thy unconquered soul shall knowG
All passionate rapture and despairH
-
'Thou shalt drink deep of joy and fameI
And love shall burn thee like a fireJ
And pain shall cleanse thee like a flameI
To purge the dross from thy desireJ
-
'So shall thy chastened spirit yearnK
To seek from its blind prayer releaseL
And spent and pardoned sue to learnK
The simple secret of My peaceL
-
I bending from my sevenfold heightM
Will teach thee of My quickening graceN
Life is a prism of My lightM
And Death the shadow of My face '-
