The summer dawn came over soonA
The earth was like hot iron at noonA
In NazarethB
There fell no rain to ease the heatC
And dusk drew on with tired feetC
And stifled breathD
-
The shop was low and hot and squareE
And fresh cut wood made sharp the airE
While all day longF
The saw went tearing thru the oakG
That moaned as tho' the tree's heart brokeG
Beneath its wrongF
-
The narrow street was full of criesH
Of bickering and snarling liesH
In many keysI
The tongues of Egypt and of RomeJ
And lands beyond the shifting foamJ
Of windy seasI
-
Sometimes a ruler riding fastK
Scattered the dark crowds as he passedK
And drove them closeL
In doorways drawing broken breathD
Lest they be trampled to their deathD
Where the dust roseM
-
There in the gathering night and noiseN
A group of Galilean boysN
Crowding to seeO
Gray Joseph toiling with his sonP
Saw Jesus when the task was doneP
Turn wearilyO
-
He passed them by with hurried treadQ
Silently nor raised his headQ
He who looked upR
Drinking all beauty from his birthS
Out of the heaven and the earthS
As from a cupR
-
And Mary who was growing oldT
Knew that the pottage would be coldT
When he returnedU
He hungered only for the nightV
And westward bending sharp and brightV
The thin moon burnedU
-
He reached the open western gateW
Where whining halt and leper waitW
And came at lastK
To the blue desert where the deepX
Great seas of twilight lay asleepX
Windless and vastK
-
With shining eyes the stars awokeG
The dew lay heavy on his cloakG
The world was dimY
And in the stillness he could hearZ
His secret thoughts draw very nearA2
And call to himY
-
Faint voices lifted shrill with painB2
And multitudinous as rainB2
From all the landsC2
And all the villages thereofD2
Men crying for the gift of loveD2
With outstretched handsC2
-
Voices that called with ceaseless cryingE2
The broken and the blind the dyingE2
And those grown dumbF2
Beneath oppression and he heardG2
Upon their lips a single wordG2
ComeF2
-
Their cries engulfed him like the nightV
The moon put out her placid lightV
And black and lowH2
Nearer the heavy thunder drewI2
Hushing the voices yet he knewI2
That he would goH2
-
A quick spun thread of lightning burnsJ2
And for a flash the day returnsJ2
He only hearsK2
Joseph an old man bent and whiteV
Toiling alone from morn till nightV
Thru all the yearsL2
-
Swift clouds make all the heavens blindM2
A storm is running on the windM2
He only seesI
How Mary will stretch out her handsC2
Sobbing who never understandsC2
Voices like theseI
