Sunset: St. Louis Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFGB HIJC DKLM

Hushed in the smoky haze of summer sunsetA
When I came home again from far off placesB
How many times I saw my western cityC
Dream by her riverD
-
Then for an hour the water wore a mantleE
Of tawny gold and mauve and misted turquoiseF
Under the tall and darkened arches bearingG
Gray high flung bridgesB
-
Against the sunset water towers and steeplesH
Flickered with fire up the slope to westwardI
And old warehouses poured their purple shadowsJ
Across the leveeC
-
High over them the black train swept with thunderD
Cleaving the city leaving far beneath itK
Wharf boats moored beside the old side wheelersL
Resting in twilightM
