Midnight and in the darkness not a soundA
So with hushed breathing sleeps the autumn nightB
Only the white immortal stars shall knowC
Here in the house with the low lintelled doorD
How for the last time I have lit the lampE
I think you are not wholly careless nowF
Walls that have sheltered me so many an hourG
Bed that has brought me ecstasy and sleepH
Floors that have borne me when a gale of joyI
Lifted my soul and made me half a godJ
Farewell Across the threshold many feetK
Shall pass but never Sappho's feet againL
Girls shall come in whom love has made awareM
Of all their swaying beauty they shall singN
But never Sappho's voice like golden fireG
Shall seek for heaven thru your echoing raftersO
There shall be swallows bringing back the springN
Over the long blue meadows of the seaP
And south wind playing on the reeds of rainQ
But never Sappho's whisper in the nightB
Never her love cry when the lover comesR
Farewell I close the door and make it fastS
-

-
The little street lies meek beneath the moonT
Running as rivers run to meet the seaP
I too go seaward and shall not returnU
Oh garlands on the doorposts that I passV
Woven of asters and of autumn leavesW
I make a prayer for you Cypris be kindX
That every lover may be given loveY
I shall not hasten lest the paving stonesZ
Should echo with my sandals and awakeA2
Those who are warm beneath the cloak of sleepH
Lest they should rise and see me and should sayB2
Whither goes Sappho lonely in the nightB
Whither goes Sappho Whither all men goC
But they go driven straining back with fearC2
And Sappho goes as lightly as a leafD2
Blown from brown autumn forests to the seaP
-

-
Here on the rock Zeus lifted from the wavesE2
I shall await the waking of the dawnF2
Lying beneath the weight of dark as oneG2
Lies breathless till the lover shall awakeA2
And with the sun the sea shall cover meP
I shall be less than the dissolving foamH2
Murmuring and melting on the ebbing tideI2
I shall be less than spindrift less than shellsJ2
And yet I shall be greater than the godsK2
For destiny no more can bow my soulL2
As rain bows down the watch fires on the hillsM2
Yea if my soul escape it shall aspireN2
To the white heaven as flame that has its willO2
I go not bitterly not dumb with painQ
Not broken by the ache of love I goC
As one grown tired lies down and hopes to sleepH
Yet they shall say It was for CercolasM2
She died because she could not bear her loveY
They shall remember how we used to walkP2
Here on the cliff beneath the oleandersM2
In the long limpid twilight of the springN
Looking toward Lemnos where the amber skyQ2
Was pierced with the faint arrow of a starR2
How should they know the wind of a new beautyP
Sweeping my soul had winnowed it with songS2
I have been glad tho' love should come or goC
Happy as trees that find a wind to sway themT2
Happy again when it has left them restU2
Others shall say Grave Dica wrought her deathV2
She would not lift her lips to take a kissM2
Or ever lift her eyes to take a smileW2
She was a pool the winter paves with iceM2
That the wild hunter in the hills must leaveX2
With thirst unslaked in the brief southward sunG2
Ah Dica it is not for thee I goC
And not for Phaon tho' his ship lifts sailY2
Here in the windless harbor for the southZ2
Oh darkling deities that guard the NileW2
Watch over one whose gods are far awayB2
Egypt be kind to him his eyes are deepH
Yet they are wrong who say it was for himA3
How should they know that Sappho lived and diedI2
Faithful to love not faithful to the loverG
Never transfused and lost in what she lovedB3
Never so wholly loving nor at peaceM2
I asked for something greater than I foundA
And every time that love has made me weepH
I have rejoiced that love could be so strongS2
For I have stood apart and watched my soulL2
Caught in the gust of passion as a birdC3
With baffled wings against the dusty whirlwindD3
Struggles and frees itself to find the skyQ2
It is not for a single god I goC
I have grown weary of the winds of heavenG2
I will not be a reed to hold the soundA
Of whatsoever breath the gods may blowC
Turning my torment into music for themT2
They gave me life the gift was bountifulE3
I lived with the swift singing strength of fireG
Seeking for beauty as a flame for fuelE3
Beauty in all things and in every hourG
The gods have given life I gave them songS2
The debt is paid and now I turn to goC
-
-
-
The breath of dawn blows the stars out like lampsM2
There is a rim of silver on the seaP
As one grown tired who hopes to sleep I goC
