IA
-
Oh chimes set high on the sunny towerB
Ring on ring on unendinglyC
Make all the hours a single hourB
For when the dusk begins to flowerB
The man I love will come to meD
-
But no go slowly as you willC
I should not bid you hasten soE
For while I wait for love to comeF
Some other girl is standing dumbF
Fearing her love will goE
-
IIA
-
Oh white steam over the roofs blow highA
Oh chimes in the tower ring clear and freeD
Oh sun awake in the covered skyA
For the man I love loves me IA
-
Oh drifting steam disperse and dieA
Oh tower stand shrouded toward the southG
Fate heard afar my happy cryA
And laid her finger on my mouthG
-
IIIA
-
The dusk was blue with blowing mistH
The lights were spangles in a veilC
And from the clamor far belowE
Floated faint music like a wailC
-
It voiced what I shall never speakI
My heart was breaking all night longJ
But when the dawn was hard and grayK
My tears distilled into a songJ
-
IVA
-
I said I have shut my heartL
As one shuts an open doorM
That Love may starve thereinN
And trouble me no moreM
-
But over the roofs there cameO
The wet new wind of MayK
And a tune blew up from the curbP
Where the street pianos playK
-
My room was white with the sunQ
And Love cried out in meD
I am strong I will break your heartL
Unless you set me freeD
